Nail Biting Treatment
Nail biting (onychophagia) is a common habit that can damage the nails, cuticles, and surrounding skin, leading to infections, permanent nail deformity, and significant cosmetic concerns. Because chronic nail biting is a habit and habits are difficult to break, an expert evaluation and ongoing support is often helpful. Through a virtual nail consultation, Dr. Dana Stern can assess the extent of nail damage, identify any associated nail conditions, and develop a personalized treatment plan to restore healthy nail growth.
What Is Nail Biting?
Nail biting, medically known as onychophagia, is one of the most common body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). Although often dismissed as a harmless habit, chronic nail biting can significantly damage the nails, cuticles, nail folds, and surrounding skin. Repeated trauma may lead to brittle nails, nail deformity, chronic inflammation, infections, nail shortening, and permanent damage to the nail matrix in severe cases. Nail biting also increases the risk of bacterial and viral infections around the nails and transfer of germs to the mouth.
What Causes Chronic Nail Biting?
Nail biting is a complex behavior that may be triggered by stress, anxiety, boredom, perfectionism, habit, or concentration. Many people bite their nails without realizing they are doing it, while others use nail biting as a coping mechanism during stressful situations. Contributing factors may include: stress, anxiety, boredom, habitual behavior, perfectionisms, childhood onset, family history. Because repeated trauma can permanently affect nail growth, early intervention is beneficial.
Common Signs of Nail Biting Damage
If you experience any of the following, an evaluation may be warranted.
Shortened or uneven nails or nail plate damage
Ragged or damaged cuticles
Redness or swelling around the nails
Recurrent nail infections (paronychia)
Bleeding around the nail folds
Nail ridging or deformity
Brittle or splitting nails
Pain or tenderness around the nails

Build A More Effective Nail Biting Treatment Plan
If your nails remain damaged despite attempts to stop biting, or you are experiencing frustration or embarrassment because of your nails, Dr. Stern will carefully evaluate the underlying cause and develop an individualized treatment plan focused on restoring nail health and preventing further damage. In some cases, chronic nail biting has resulted in permanent nail matrix injury, while in others, an additional nail disorder such as psoriasis, eczema, or fungal infection may be contributing to the problem.
